Grand Bassin is the main place of worship for Mauritian Hindus, sacred and crowded during the annual Mahâ Shivaratri pilgrimage. The immediate surroundings of the lake are amazing and attest to the importance of the place for the Mauritians: giant statues and huge parking lots. Apart from the faithful and the curious, the temples of Grand Bassin also attract monkeys, numerous in the region. They were introduced by the Portuguese on their return from Malaysia in 1528. They roam in small groups along the forest road, especially in the undergrowth of the Black River Gorges. If they are harmless, it is better not to feed them.
