The village of Flic en Flac is spread out along the coastal road and the streets running perpendicular to it. For years, the area has been a resort for some of the city's upland dwellers, who have built second homes interspersed with tourist complexes of little charm - apart from the superb hotels in the Wolmar sector, further south. Bars, restaurants, bungalows and boutiques have invaded the coastline, separated from the beach by a road, with no real layout or overall unity. The undeveloped areas are occupied by a marine graveyard, where the most opportunistic developers, in their innermost nightmares, have to estimate the price per square metre every year! The area has thus become the Grand Baie of the West: a busy, lively seaside resort, where people don't necessarily come to find the Mauritian soul... The oceanfront remains pleasant, however. Wider than the average, the long, beautiful beach is bordered by a profusion of filaos trees, which partly shade it and promise gentle siestas, games and picnics. Relatively quiet during the week, the area comes alive at weekends when many Mauritian families storm the beach, bringing tents, food and musical instruments. To the sounds of maravans and ice-cream vendors, the beach takes on a festive air, very local and quite pleasant, unless you're looking for a quiet swimming area... Follow the coastal road a few hundred meters south to Wolmar, where the atmosphere changes dramatically: luxury, calm, green parks.
