Brives-Charensac, populated by 4,500 residents, nestles peacefully along the quiet course of the Loire. On the right bank of the river, Brives has origins rooted in Gallic history, while Charensac, on the opposite bank, dates back to an ancient Gallo-Roman villa, mentioned as early as the 11th century by its first occupant, Hiarensus. Once separate villages, they were connected by a toll bridge. They were not merged until 1839. The construction of today's Brives-Charensac bridge is one of the Velay's major projects, and in the 18th century was a crucial infrastructure for the region's economic development.
