Brioude, sub-prefecture of the department, has 6 720 inhabitants. It is located at the gateway to the Allier gorges, on the Via Arvena road which links Clermont-Ferrand to Santiago de Compostela. It is a pleasant town where life is good. Its main attraction is the Basilica Saint-Julien (11th-12th centuries), the largest Romanesque church in Auvergne, and its admirable stained glass windows. The Hôtel de la Dentelle (an exhibition and creation centre) and the Maison de Mandrin (an art exhibition site) are also worth a visit. In summer, the Saturday morning market is often animated by storytellers, musicians and dancers strolling through the streets.
