At the heart of the Central Catchment nature reserve, which extends over 2,000 ha, lies MacRitchie Reservoir. Far from the polished jungle of the botanical gardens, here you're really in the rainforest, and some of the trails can be strenuous. A 12 km trail (about 5 hours' walk) circles the reservoir. It can be very hot, so take water, good shoes and mosquito repellent. If walking isn't your thing, you can enjoy the reservoir by renting a kayak from the Paddle Lodge.
