Tan Yeok Nee, a native of Teochew, made his fortune in the pepper and gambier trade. In 1885, he had a superb house built for himself. It is unique in Singapore with its granite columns and sculptures imported from China. After Tan Yeok Nee's death, this house was owned by a variety of people: a stationmaster, a bishop, the residents of a girls' school, the Japanese army under occupation and the Salvation Army.
