A true Singapore icon, the half-lion, half-fish statue spitting water into the bay attracts tourists from all over the world. But what's so special about this statue? It's a bit like Brussels' Manneken Pis, the symbol of a city, found in all its forms in souvenir stores. Created in 1964 as a logo for the Singapore Tourism Board, the Merlion recalls the legend of Sang Nila Umata's sighting of a creature on the city-state's present site. A replica also dominates Sentosa Island.

Built in 1881, the temple is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali, wife of Shiva. Veeramakaliamman means "brave Kali". She is represented with five pairs of arms and legs. She holds weapons in her multiple hands, including a trident and freshly cut men's heads. She tramples on a corpse and wears a skull necklace around her neck. With such attributes, she is as feared as she is revered. Kali is represented surrounded by her sons Ganesh and Murugan.
