It is one of the oldest mosques in Singapore, built in 1827 by the Chulias. They are part of the first immigrants of Singapore, arriving as early as 1822. They settled and worked around the river and many lived around Telok Ayer Street. In Tamil, the mosque is called Kuchu Pali(kuchu means "refuge" and Palli means "mosque"). Originally, the mosque was little more than a palm-roofed hut.
