With over 300,000 inhabitants, the former capital of North Borneo, under British protectorate from 1883 to 1946, is the second largest city in the state of Sabah. In the 1930s, Sandakan was even the world's most important port for exotic wood exports. Occupied by the Japanese between 1942 and 1945, the latter organized the exodus of 6,000 prisoners to Ranau under inhumane conditions. Like KK, Sandakan is not a town to linger in, but rather an intermediate stopover before heading out into the surrounding area.Having been razed to the ground during the Second World War, there are no architectural remains from before 1945. One shophouse follows another, and you'll enjoy visiting its port, still important for the export of tobacco, cocoa, coffee and hemp, as well as its imposing covered market.
