As well as selling a wide range of Indonesian products, the fair also features cultural performances.
Pasar Malam comes from the Indonesian word for night market, and even if the event doesn't take place exclusively in the evening, it's an opportunity to export Indonesian culture around the world. In Suriname, August 9 is a very special day, commemorating the arrival of the Javanese emigrants from Indonesia to Suriname in 1890. On this day, the Pasar Malam is held, an Indonesian fair featuring cultural performances and the sale of Indonesian products. A fascinating part of Surinamese culture!
