There is no regular boat service to St. Joseph, but most of the service providers offering the excursion to the Salvation Islands will take you there. In the days of the penal colony, the island was home to an asylum, cells for the toughest convicts and a cemetery for the overseers. The remains of what was called "Silence Island" are in poor condition and the visit has the air of an expedition, but this is precisely what gives this desolate place its charm. Opulent, nature erases at its own pace the memory of an inglorious episode. Everywhere, branches and roots choke these dungeons which still tell the suffering of the men who lived there.
