Bandos boasts an area of 2 km², which makes it one of the largest islands in the archipelago. On the other hand, the island looks more like a small town than a deserted beach. According to Pyrard, a French traveller whose ship ran aground in the lagoon in 1602, the island was inhabited by a Tamil tribe from India. In 1962, it was transformed into an orphanage, which was moved to Villingili in 1968. Finally, on December 10, 1972, following Kurumba, the island became the second to be exploited for tourism and was last renovated in 2005. Some of the rooms show the stigma of intensive exploitation and could use a good refresh. Six Beach Villas and 2 Garden Villas were added in 2019, and these are the ones you'll ask for at the hotel, if you're aiming for one of these two categories to enjoy brand new comfort. The resort also renovated its common areas (reception, bars, restaurants and shops) that same year. The neighbouring island, Kuda Bandos or Little Bandos, has long remained deserted. It has only been developed since 2016 and operated by the Maldivian group Malahini, completely independent of Bandos. In the past, the channel between the two islands was reserved for the passage of boats bringing messages to the sultans. Bandos is one of the most popular resorts in the Maldives and has a consistently high occupancy rate with a large number of repeat guests. If some appreciate its proximity to the airport and the possibility to take your first bath in the lagoon in less than 30 minutes, others regret the constant noise of seaplanes and long-distance flights that fly over the island when approaching or leaving the international airport.
