Meerufenfushi is one of the largest resort islands in the Maldives. It is 1.2 km long and 350 m wide with a surface area of 60 hectares. Unlike many small islands, there is no confinement syndrome here. Despite the large number of rooms, the owners have managed to preserve the island's lush vegetation without turning it into a landscaped garden. The paved walkways are lined with thick vegetation, as is the beachfront. Unfortunately, the island is suffering from erosion and the 2009 coral bleaching wave has taken a toll on the reef. Drastic solutions have been undertaken to preserve this little paradise: re-sandbagging to preserve the beach and replanting corals in association with the local NGO Save The Beach. The will to preserve this fragile environment has also resulted in the construction of a water treatment plant and a drinking water production workshop. This makes it possible to limit the use of plastic, a real scourge in the Maldives, which does not yet have an incinerator to eliminate its waste. The island also has a vast vegetable garden which supplies a large part of the vegetables to the hotel's restaurants, thus reducing imports. Meerufenfushi is occupied by the Meeru Island Resort and Spa, owned by the Crown & Champa Resorts hotel group. Due to its size, Meerufenfushi offers many sporting activities including a golf putt, but also a football field, two tennis courts, a badminton court, a cricket field, beach volleyball courts and two swimming pools. There are also a few shops, including a souvenir shop where you can have clothes made from fabrics you choose by the metre. It is impossible to get bored here as there is a wide range of leisure activities and excursions. The dhonis attached to the hotel are used for day cruises or at sunset to sip a cocktail while watching the dolphins frolic in the glowing sun. A clinic and a doctor are available 24 hours a day to provide first aid and to relieve minor injuries. A friendly atmosphere reigns at Meerufenfushi, where exchanges with the Maldivian staff are frequent and appreciated by the guests. This large and lively island will also appeal to those who want to be left alone, as its size means that even in the high season, there is a minimum of people around. Whether you are looking for relaxation, diving or partying, this island will meet your expectations for a quality/price ratio that attracts customers from all over the world.
