This artificial island was built 2 metres above sea level, with the aim of relieving congestion in Male and establishing additional industries and businesses. Its construction and rehabilitation was due to be completed in 2020, but development projects are still in full swing. It was inaugurated in May 2004, and the first residents moved in at that time. The first phase of development began with the goal of housing 60,000 people in an area of 180 hectares. Today, Hulhumalé has about 50,000 inhabitants, compared to 1,000 at the time of its inauguration. For years, the inhabitants of Male were reluctant to move there. This is no longer the case, and the waiting list for housing is getting longer and longer. The island has become much more hospitable, with shops, restaurants, cafes, hotels and over 60 guest houses. The sprawling, suburban-style architecture is unique to the Maldives and is a source of pride for the people. The second phase of development will allow Hulhumale to reach 240 hectares and eventually accommodate at least 100,000 people. This phase began with the closure of the Club Faru resort on the neighbouring Farukolhufushi island-hotel and work is now underway to link the two islands.Hulhumale has a pleasant feel compared to Malé. Its avenues are wide and bright and relatively deserted. Its many hotels make it a destination of choice for those who wish to spend a night near the airport.
