Formerly a seaside resort, Mayaro now seems to have driven tourists away from its lands. Located about 20 kilometers south of Manzanilla, near one of Trinidad's most beautiful beaches, it seems desperate to look back on a prosperous past. In the town, which stretches for several kilometers along a road that runs along the beach, signs of a tourist activity that we don't know if it is definitely over or simply unreal. But the oil era has come and gone. Since Mayaro has gone out of fashion, since a line of off-shore oil rigs dot the horizon... It doesn't really make you want to swim in a water that is already very turbulent! Many rich Trinidadians have preferred to invest in the now posh Chaguaramas peninsula, a few minutes from Port of Spain, or in Tobago, rather than renovating these old beach houses that have been mistreated by the harsh climate. Now we come to contemplate a slightly romantic town with its old-fashioned charm, the wild beauty of Mayaro, and its well-kept secrets. For those who love ghost towns, Mayaro should not disappoint but beware of security.A morning walk around Mayaro offers many chances to encounter a rich wildlife. You will see many birds, including brown pelicans (which dive into the water to catch fish, very impressive!), snipe, osprey, hawks, but also (if you are lucky!) mongoose or iguanas.
