"Arima" could mean "a place with lots of water", or it could be the name of a plant used by the Amerindians to catch fish, which is very common in this region. Whatever its meaning, Arima has kept its Amerindian name, and that's the main thing for its proud inhabitants, most of whom are descendants of the island's original inhabitants, who have clustered here since colonization.Today, Arima is an important town, both in terms of its size (the island's third most populous, with 35,000 inhabitants) and its geographical location, at the crossroads of the island's roads and just 10 km from Piarco. Tourism is still underdeveloped and little has been done to encourage it. The only real attraction lies in the fact that the town is strategically located at the crossroads of the north and east coasts, ideal for exploring this small island without moving your suitcase: one day in Port of Spain, one day in the south, one day in San Fernando..
