Vibrant, colourful, mongrel, bridge between an atypical colonial history and an abrupt modernity, the capital of Trinidad is truly in the image of his country. As a mixture of genres, it is set as a patchwork of community neighbourhoods, Indians in the west, black to the east, white in the north, where the friquées residential zones rub up with ghettos. Roman Catholic churches interspersed with Hindu temples, mosques, the houses of Evangelical worship, and the Creole, Chinese, Indian, Italian, Syrian… Port of Spain, cosmopolitan, welcomes all cultures. Featuring a mix of small wooden victorian houses and large buildings, large glass and steel towers to the sky little by little. The architecture of Port of Spain constantly recalls the British legacy, while expressing the hopes of a country perhaps promised to become the small Kuwait of the Caribbean.Over the last few years, economic takeoff and the new flow of money that is taking place do not go without a certain americanization of the city. The small traditional stalls of the centre now coexist with the major commercial malls located in the residential periphery to the new middle and easy classes. Itinerant sandwiches must compete with the international brands of fast-food. But these new Anglo-Saxon phenomena are like a mask thrown on the city, and there is great hope that Port of Spain, the capital of the carnival, will be able to do this new thing what it has always been able to do with many influences that have crossed it throughout its history: " recycling ". For the visitor of passage, the americanization, relative americanization of Port of Spain, however, has advantages. It gains the freedom to evolve at its own discretion through a capital with a strong personality, enjoying its traditional lifestyle still alive, where the spirit of the party continues to weld all communities, without having to renounce the comfort and facilities of modern life.
