About fifteen kilometers south of El Real, Pirre Uno is the station of the national park rangers. It is one of the best places in the world for bird watching. You can see the majestic harpy eagle, the national bird. A pickup takes about 35 US$ per person from El Real. The area around Pirre offers beautiful waterfalls, which are easily accessible on foot, and numerous jungle hikes. One of these is a climb to Cerro Pirre, which is over 1,400 meters high. There is a camp at Rancho Plástico (halfway up) and another at the top. Not far from Pirre is an Embera community: Pijibasal. The village has about 150 inhabitants and opened to tourism a few years ago, thanks to its proximity to the national park. Lodging in traditional huts for about ten people, in hammocks or on mattresses, with mosquito nets. Solar energy in the evening limited to two hours. Excursions in the jungle and multiple activities are proposed with indigenous guides. Beautiful moments in perspective! In 1 hour and a half walk from Pijibasal, you can reach Rancho Frío, a MiAmbiente resort located in the national park itself. Lodging in dormitory for about 15 US$ per person. It is rustic, without electricity. The site in the middle of the forest is magical. Take water, or purification tablets, and beware of snakes and other bugs...
