Located at the mouth of the Río Tuira, La Palma is the capital of Darién. But with its colorful wooden houses climbing the hill, it looks like a big village. The atmosphere is relaxed, even a bit offbeat, when you see this bus going back and forth along the main street (the only one, in fact) that runs along the river, while it takes 10 minutes to walk from one side of the city to the other. The trip costs 25 cents for a few hundred meters... probably the most expensive bus in the country! La Palma is frequented by visiting sailors, traders and fishermen, which explains the impressive number of cantinas, popular places of entertainment, and the popularity of cockfights, the favorite pastime of the inhabitants on weekends. For you, the locality will probably be the starting point for expeditions in the forest, or to access indigenous villages settled along the rivers. Nevertheless, take the time to stroll around and get a feel for the atmosphere and climb to the top (at the end of the main street) for a panoramic view of the San Miguel Gulf. The path continues to La Puentita, a 10-minute walk away, a fishing village where old boats are repaired. Another possible excursion is to the ruins of the 18th century Spanish forts of San Carlos and San Lorenzo, located in the San Miguel Gulf, a 20 minute lancha ride away.
