It was the first national park created in Panama (1966). Covering an area of 4,816 ha, its highest point, Pic Campana, reaches 1,030 m. On weekends, Panamanians love to hike its five marked trails, breathe in the fresh air (around 24°C during the day) and pause to contemplate the view from the vantage point. The landscape plunges down to the impressive mangroves at the mouth of the Río Chame. This river has its source in the park, as do the ríos Caimito, Perequeté and Trinidad. Grab your binoculars: the area is yet another bird-lover's paradise! There are 270 species, 48 of which are migratory. The park is also home to 62 species of amphibians and 86 reptiles. The most isolated areas of Cerro Campana are home to several endemic species. Just beyond the park lies the village of Chicá, with its plant and flower vendors, small fondas and homestays. The region abounds in rivers and waterfalls.
