This 4,000-hectare park links the Metropolitan Natural Park to the south and the Soberanía Park to the north. Its name comes from the famous road that runs through it. Once used by the Spaniards to transport goods, gold and silver from South America, between Panamá Ciudad on the Pacific side and Nombre de Dios or Portobelo on the Caribbean side, the Camino de Cruces leads to the Río Chagres, which supplies the canal with water.Several sendero options are available, of varying lengths: Capricornio, Los Guardaparques, El Mirador, Ruinas de Cárdenas or La Palangana, Camarón. El Sendero Los Guardaparques is an easy 45-minute walk through the countryside near Miraflores Locks. To venture deeper into the park, it is advisable to take a guide (check with agencies in the capital), as the path is poorly maintained and you are in the jungle. You'll encounter exuberant vegetation inhabited by howler monkeys, sloths, coatis and snakes... just four kilometers from the capital.
