Before the filling of the artificial lake of Gatún, Barro Colorado was a hill. The needs of the canal converted it into a refuge island for the animals of the flooded valley. Soon, biologists realized the scientific importance of this tropical sanctuary. Founded in 1923, the Barro Colorado Reserve obtained the status of a nature reserve in 1979, protecting the surrounding peninsulas (Gigante, Peña Blanca, Bohío, Buena Vista and Frijoles), more than 5,400 hectares in the heart of Lake Gatún. This preserved ecosystem attracts scientists from all over the world who study the evolution of the flora and fauna
