Archipelago of volcanic origin located less than 5 kilometers from the coast of the capital, the Magdalen Islands are steep and wild. Both a bird sanctuary and a national park, they harbor exceptional flora and fauna, including turtles that come to lay their eggs on the beach during the winter. The island of Serpents, the larger of the two, takes its name from a French rebel sergeant, Serpens, who was deported to the island, and who would have led people to believe that the island is infested with snakes. In reality, only the hissing snake, harmless to humans, has been recorded there. Lougne Island, more inhospitable, is the refuge of cormorants.
