GRAN MUSEO DEL MUNDO MAYA
Museum that aims to make better known and transmit the Mayan culture of yesterday and today in Merida
This museum, inaugurated in September 2012, aims to make Mayan culture, past and present, better known and transmitted. Its architecture, in the image of the Mayan cosmogony, evokes the sky, the earth and the underworld, and plunges us immediately into the backstage of this civilization. Through a dynamic and interactive museography, magnificent archaeological pieces (original or reconstructed, such as the facade of the temple of Ek'Balam) and historical documents, which also highlight the contemporary culture of the Maya and their life in the 19th century, before the Mexican Revolution. The museum also explains very well certain aspects of Mayan culture that are usually overlooked in other museums: the functioning of the calendar, numeration and cosmogony are presented through very well-made short films and an installation of interactive screens. An indispensable and exciting visit. On Saturdays and Sundays, a 2-hour guided tour is offered, in English (at 10 am) or Spanish (at 12 noon), and allows you to understand Mayan culture in its entirety. Thematic tours are also programmed, such as the one devoted to the milpa, the ancestral agro-ecological production system that continues to inspire peasants today. Beforehand, a detour via the museum's well-designed website will inform you about its current events. On weekends at 8.30 pm, avideo mapping is projected on the museum's façade .
