Zipolite was born in the late 60's, after some hippies who came to celebrate the lunar eclipse of 1968 decided to stay there, attracted by the beauty of this strip of fine sand facing the ocean. Leaving their coffee plantations, some inhabitants of Puerto Angel then went to live around the gringos, creating small dwellings in the form of rustic huts on the beach and selling the fish brought back by the fishermen of the nearby localities. Known for naturism, tolerance of soft drug use, meditation and tantric massages, Zipolite still deserves its nickname of Playa del Amor. The town with its sandy paths has grown in the last twenty years, and now has several "neighborhoods": the left side (looking out to sea) corresponds to the first establishments with the rough and casual soul of bygone days, and the right side, more recent, where the hotels and restaurants a little more chic have settled. A shopping street, Calle del Adoquin, has even been paved, creating a kind of small tourist center parallel to the shore. There are several places to party, and parties are often held on the beach (people come from Mazunte and San Agustinillo, where the nightlife is relatively quieter). Vans or collective cabs take you to Puerto Angel (2 km away) and Pochutla (15 km). In the other direction, you can go to San Agustinillo and Mazunte (6 km), and the town of San Antonio (15 km), where the coastal road goes up the main road where the buses that connect Huatulco to Puerto Escondido pass.
