It has about 4,600 inhabitants. The village was first taken by the Spaniards in 1618, who kept its original Quechua name, Sabay Pata. It was inhabited for a long time by Chiriguaro Indians and has retained its colonial appearance. It was occupied, for a few hours, by Che's guerrilla group, who organized a cabildo, an open dialogue with the local population, to explain their presence in Bolivia. Samaipata is a very pleasant place to stay, and many foreigners have settled there: according to the locals, no less than 22 nationalities are represented. One will cross there in particular many "hippies".
