57 km from La Paz. About 2,500 inhabitants. Average altitude: 1,740 m. The name Coroico, a contraction of Kory Ojko, is an Aymara term that means "a place where there is gold". Today, the golds are those of the sun playing with the clouds and the banana trees shining under the dew. Coroico is the largest of the villages in the Yungas, transitional valleys between the Amazon and the Andes. This meeting of cold and hot, of coca and coffee (which is cultivated here in terraces, following the Inca method), gave birth to the Afro-Andean rhythm, the Saya. The village has many accommodation possibilities and various activities are offered.
