Population 265,000. Average altitude : 3 735 m. On the face of it, Oruro, a mining city that has fallen into disgrace, would not have the charm or architectural beauty of Sucre or Potosí. The reputation of Oruro comes of course from its colourful carnival, second in terms of attendance after that of Rio de Janeiro. Every year, around February, the diabolic and multicoloured angels invest the city, accompanied by richly adorned dancers. They exorcise all the violence of an unjust history with the most beautiful dances of the continent. Three days of a Dionysian orgy of colours, music and sensations, a true concentrate of the Bolivian soul.
