Altitude: 3,900 m. The Curahuara village of Carangas, located on the road to Sajama from La Paz, is worth a visit to admire its magnificent 16th century church, a true architectural and cultural treasure of the Andes. An eroded valley gives access to the village, surrounded by beautiful hills. A barracks based in Curahuara may be of interest to Andinists as the regiment often climbs in the Sajama National Park and the Nevados de Payachatas. It was this regiment that, in 1995, had to remove from the Nevado Sajama the bodies of two Belgian mountaineers who had the misfortune of venturing onto the country's highest peak without a mountain guide.
