About a thousand inhabitants. The village of Chipaya is located in the northern part of the Salar de Coipasa, at an altitude of more than 4,000 m, at the foot of the Sabaya mountain, the "lord" of this region. The Chipayas (or rather the Uru-Chipayas) are currently the oldest ethnic group in the Americas. They have successively endured the conquests and attempts at acculturation by the Tiwanakota, Aymara, Quechua, Spanish and Republican peoples, and are now undergoing the ideology of the Anglo-Saxon Protestant sects, which undoubtedly represent the most serious threat to their identity. A visit requires both cultural and mental preparation.
