Average altitude: 3,625 m. 910,000 inhabitants, or 2 million with the population of El Alto. La Paz is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing and colourful cities on the planet. The colourful tones of the aguayos of the proud city cholas, the brightness of the dozens of varieties of chillies, the green of the coca leaf contrast with the immaculate white of Mount Illimani, the city's iconic figure (6,465 m above sea level). When the sun, Inti, gives way to Quilla, the Moon, La Paz is transformed into a true palette of colours. La Paz creates an emotion. A thousand lives merge in this paradoxical capital, which brings together golden boys from the city centre and Aymara Indians from the hills. The latter prefer to call the city Chuquiagu Marka, literally "the city of the Golden Valley". This precious metal is now only found in museums. La Paz offers a stay of multiple interests, one hour from the Royal Cordillera, 3 hours from Lake Titicaca and the Yungas valleys. There are countless opportunities for visits and excursions. La Paz is a city for all tastes, with many restaurants in the centre and in Socopachi; the indigenous markets of the centre (witches' market) are inexhaustible places to shop. Modern bars or traditional Bolivian music peñas, museums, churches are all opportunities to immerse yourself in the cultural and nocturnal life of the region.
