Halfway between Samana and the village of Las Galeras, Los Cacaos used to be a port of embarkation for the large blocks of marble extracted from the nearby quarries. The pier, devastated by Hurricane David in 1979, was never rebuilt. This amputation deprived the village of its activity, but not its qualities of hospitality, nor its traditions: the children wear black amulets supposed to protect them from the evil eye and you may be told the story of the Ciguapas, these beautiful women, with their feet turned upside down, who come down from the mountains only to steal salt and men. The small fishing village is worth a stop
