Capital of the province of Samaná, this modern town was partly destroyed by fire in 1946. It was subsequently rebuilt on Balaguer's orders. Whale-watching is the local highlight, as is a visit to Los Haïtises National Park. The town's American-sounding surnames are due to the fact that it was once populated by slaves from the USA and the Leeward Islands. Numerous traditions bear witness to their history, as does the practice of Protestantism - which is rarer in the country. A dozen buses a day connect Santo Domingo in 2h45 (caribetours.com.do).
