Wedged between the green mountains and the bay of Samaná, Sánchez seems to have stopped its clock at the beginning of the century. Once an active and prosperous port, it now has a nonchalant rhythm. Its old railroad, which was used to transport agricultural products, was abandoned. But its Victorian houses with their past colours, as well as the atmosphere of the streets, give the little town an unspeakable charm. The main activity of the small port is shrimp fishing. Sánchez is also one of the departure points for the Haitises National Park. A dozen buses a day connect with Santo Domingo (caribetours.com.do).
