Salcedo is a small country town populated by farmers. It is of historical interest because it was the home of the Mirabal sisters, heroines of the resistance to the Trujillo dictatorship. The three sisters, also known as the Mariposas (butterflies), were from the village of Ojo de Agua in the province of Salcedo, and fiercely opposed Trujillo's dictatorship by arming the insurgents and fighting against the tyrant's troops themselves. All three were brutally murdered on November 25, 1960. The province of Salcedo was renamed Hermanas Mirabal in 2007, in their honor.
