In the heart of the Cibao region, Moca retains a simple, friendly atmosphere. Its wealth comes from the region's many agricultural resources (eggs, chickens, coffee, manioc). It was here in 1899 that the dictator Ulises Heureaux was assassinated. President of the Republic between 1882 and 1883 and between 1887 and 1889, he brought the country's economy to its knees, and numerous revolts ended in bloodshed. Moca is nicknamed Villa Heroica (village of heroes) in tribute to the men and women of the town who took part in the struggle for democracy in the country. The violinist and pianist Gabriel de Orbe (1888-1966) was born here.
