The village of Sosúa lies 16 km east of Puerto Plata. The road between the two towns is a long, green corridor between sugarcane fields. In 1982, the inauguration of the Luperón airport in Puerto Plata laid the foundation stone for the temple of tourism. Sosúa (which is made up of two towns, Los Charamicos and El Batey, each located at one end of its immense turquoise cove) is a very popular, often overcrowded tourist resort, where you can dissolve into idleness, sunbathing and parties galore. The beaches, bars, restaurants, hotels and nightclubs are always packed. Good-natured gaiety has given way to permanent harassment and prostitution, and Spanish is heard much less than English or German. You eat hamburgers and club sandwiches, you count in dollars, but you still dance the merengue. On this point, Dominicans don't compromise. As you can see, Sosúa is a little too touristy, and that's a shame, because the beaches are magnificent.Recently, the government has been trying to change this. In particular, it is investing in art to position the resort as a multicultural maritime paradise. It remains to be seen what the future holds.Book recommendation: Les Déracinés by Catherine Bardon. This saga tells the story of the founding of a Jewish colony in Sosúa just before the Second World War.
