Puerto Plata, nicknamed the "Bride of the Atlantic", was established in 1978. Bordered by the ocean rolling in waves along the Malecón, the city features the characteristic harmony of charming Victorian-style colonial houses. Colonial-era buildings are numerous and, for the most part, well restored, as are the downtown area, squares and streets. From the Malecón, as you make your way up towards the town hall, it's pleasant to stroll along clean, well-maintained streets, in an atmosphere of tropical nonchalance, and to encounter broad, friendly smiles along the way. Beach 5 minutes from downtown, at the eastern end of Malecón.
