Leaving Santo Domingo via Villa Mella, we reach Yamasa (population just over 50,000). Its name comes from the Arawak word for "wetland". Yamasa is an interesting stopover in the countryside. The region is rich in remains, a real mine for archaeologists in search of evidence of the Taino civilization, or simply for enthusiasts. The region also boasts numerous clay deposits in a variety of colors. Sugar cane, bananas and mangoes are grown here. Although little known to the French, Chicho Severino, the famous bachata singer, was born in Yamasa.
