28 km west of Santo Domingo. The road linking San Cristóbal to the capital is in excellent condition. On leaving Santo Domingo, don't miss the large fresco in memory of the "benefactor of the fatherland" Trujillo, born here in 1892, by Silvano Lora. The town of San Cristóbal owes its name to the fortress erected on the banks of the Haina River on the orders of Christopher Columbus. It was here, in the early days of colonization, that the alluvial gold mines that fed the coffers of the Catholic Monarchs began to be exploited. The first Constitution of the Dominican Republic was signed in San Cristóbal on November 6, 1844.
