FÊTE DE LA ALTAGRACIA

Very soon after its foundation in 1502, the city of Higüey became an important place of worship. The Vírgen de la Altagracia, patroness of the country and known for her many miracles, is celebrated there as the protective and spiritual mother of the Dominicans. Even today, the city is an important centre of pilgrimage: on January 21, 3,000 faithful gather in the new place of worship of the Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia (Our Lady of Altagracia). It is a great celebration in which one can almost feel the religious fervour of the Dominicans.
