Although the city was founded around 1502 by Juan de Esquivel, its development dates from the beginning of the century. It is linked to the construction of the country's largest private sector sugar refinery. In the 1970s, as world sugar prices plummeted, Gulf and Western Inc, the American company that owned the refinery, decided to expand its activities to tourism. La Romana soon became an international destination for high-end tourism. There are few interesting monuments in this city of 250,000 inhabitants, which is entirely devoted to the tourism industry and the development of its industrial zones.
