At 70 km from Santo Domingo. For the visitor of passage, San Pedro presents only few tourist attractions and deserves only a fast walk. The city, one of the most important in the country, was founded in 1820 by German, Arab, Spanish and French immigrants, mostly planters fleeing the new Haitian republic. They were soon joined by Spaniards who had abandoned Cuba and its war of independence in 1870. A maritime opening for the inland agricultural region where plantations are numerous and a port for the export of plantains, San Pedro de Macorís reached its peak in the early 19th century.
