If it is indicated that it is a seigniory in the 13th century, the history of Saint-Etienne-Cantalès is marked by the great developments of the 19th century, with in 1891 the railway and the construction of the station of Miécaze. This station was located on the Souillac-Viescamp-sous-Jallès line and served as the terminus for the line from Bourges. A road was then built between the village of Saint-Etienne-Cantalès and Miécaze. In 1945, a hydroelectric dam is built: the town shares it with its neighbor Saint-Gérons. With a height of 69 meters, it retains the waters of the Cère. Today it is a tourist spot with several sites equipped for swimming.
