It's one of those communes in the south that's still wild. Halfway between Sainte-Luce and Le Marin, Rivière-Pilote retains its picturesque charm and lush greenery. Before 1660, French maps show a divided Martinique: the northwest belonged to the French, the southeast to the Caribs. Indeed, their most eminent representative, who dealt with the colonists, still marks the territory with his influence: to the north, it's Case Pilote, reminiscent of Chief Pilote. To the south, he settled near a powerful river that became known as the "Rivière-Pilote". Despite this division with Pilote's weight, the settlers continued to move southwards, where they settled for longer and longer periods. By 1671, settlements were concentrated mainly at the mouth of the river. It was in the second half of the 18th century that Rivière-Pilote really took off as a colonial town.
