Overlooked by Fort Royal, built in 1672 to thwart enemy attacks (and which gave the inhabitants the name Foyalais, Fort-Royal in Creole being Foyal), Fort-de-France is a bustling city by day. Its bay, nicknamed Baie des Flamands, is ranked among the world's thirty most beautiful. With its crystal-clear waters and exceptional biodiversity, including mangroves, this region is an excellent starting point for exploring the island. As soon as dawn breaks, the streets come alive with fish, vegetable and spice markets, colorful boutiques filled with the rhythms of zouk, and historic monuments that bear witness to the island's rich past. Under the leadership of Aimé Césaire, the face of Fort-de-France has changed considerably, while retaining the charm of its historic districts, notably the famous Savane, dotted with its many kiosks. Today, the city has preserved the traces of its historic past, with numerous monuments and museums reminiscent of the colonial era. Fort Saint-Louis, which has retained its military function, houses the headquarters of the French Navy.
