To reach Basse-Pointe is to embark on a journey to the mythical places of the Indian workers, the "coolies", after the abolition of slavery. Basse-Pointe is the most important gathering point for the Indian migration, the "coolies" having settled here from 1848 onwards. The commune has two temples where ritual ceremonies known as "Bondié coolie" are performed. Colonized in 1658 as soon as the natives were expelled, the region, famous for its majestic dwellings, was devoted to growing tobacco and cocoa, later replaced by sugarcane and bananas, which now occupy more than half the farmland.Lying on one of the slopes of Mount Pelée, Aimé Césaire's homeland (the writer was born in Basse-Pointe) is an ideal place to visit for nature lovers, as it abounds in green walks and hikes.
