Between 1797 and 1799, more than a thousand refractory priests were sentenced to deportation to French Guiana by order of the Directoire. Hundreds perished in Rochefort before departure, while the rest embarked for Counamama. As soon as they arrived, a third of them died. On the last Sunday in October, a pilgrimage to the Pères cemetery is organized to commemorate these deportees.
