Vieux-Habitants is considered one of the oldest communes on the island. The term "Vieux Habitants" defines the first farmers of the land, and not the first inhabitants in the sense that the toponymy of the place could suggest. Its history remains linked to that of its church, one of the oldest religious buildings on the island. In its valleys, which benefit from a dry and warm microclimate, cocoa, coffee, vanilla and roucou were cultivated. Today, it is the eco-museums that attract tourists. Vieux-Habitants has kept its authentic character while opening up to ecotourism
