The church's exterior bell tower is the oldest on the island. From a distance, it looks like an inverted boat. A path leads up to the cliff and the lighthouse, built in 1953 and inaugurated in 1955 to warn boats cruising in the canal of the proximity of the headland. On February 16, 1947, a Dominican sailing ship, La Rochannia, returning from Montserrat to Dominica, was wrecked at the southern tip of Vieux-Fort. This little-visited marine site has the charm of a wild coastline. In this commune, seamstresses perpetuate the embroidery tradition of Vieux-Fort. Off the coast lies the Saintes archipelago.
